Cendol, chendol, chendul ……..whats the correct name ?  Mr G thinks that Cendol is the correct name (pronounced “chen dol ” ). Anyway with the heat these days , a bowl of cold cendol is definitely tempting and no, we were not eating under the hot sun by the road side either.

We escaped the heat to One Utama where the Penang Road Famous Teowchew Chendul is – yeah , eat in comfort even though the price is 3-4 times more.

A quick research into the history of this franchise : Founded in 1936 as a roadside cendol stall along Lebuh Keng Kwee  by Mr Tan Teik Fuang . In 1977 his sixth son Mr Tan Chong Kim ( now the MD) took over to spearhead the company. In 1984, they officially called themselves  as Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul. They have since expanded and have franchised outlets out of Penang.

Cendol is definitely one of “MUST EAT” dessert when in Penang. Lets see how this one fares in Petaling Jaya. I must admit though its been ages since I visited Penang and the cendol I had in my last visit was not the Penang Road one. So I really cannot compare. My review is based on the current taste and how I generally feel about it.

We ordered Cendol Original and Cendol Durian .

The pictures I took from their website looks like these :

Our cendol looked like these :

Cendol durian:

Too much coconut milk or too little ice? Never mind. It tasted pretty good anyway.

For the Orignal, the red beans were nice and soft, the cendol is longish like noodles  different from the short tapered ones we normally see. The amount of cendol is generous , the brown sugar syrup is light but quite tasty.

For the Chendul Durian , I had expected to see some durian meat on top of the dish but could not find any. The smell of durian is also not overpowering – in fact I found it too light. Other than the slight smell , there is no taste of durian whatsoever . It just tasted like a plain cendol with slight durian smell.

Overall, I think the Chendul Original was better. As it came watery , we had to finish it fast as the ice all melted rather quickly.

Can I have the one which looks like the picture please….?
